The tablecloth was spread over a table when folks have happy events. This scarlet silk satin is embroidered with three vases. The vase in the center has blooming peonies. The peony is symbolic of wealth and power and the vase (ping) is homophonous to safety (ping-an). On both sides of the peonies are chrysanthemums with fingered citrons, symbolic of happiness. The whole tablecloth, in terms of its composition, design and color, shows a strong atmosphere of joy, safety and wealth.
Embroidery in Northern Hunan is featured by a realistic style with rare exaggeration. Its obvious theme and rich but not vulgar colors form a style favored by the populace.
