This painting depicts the Emei Mountain scenery after snow, and expresses the great chill and coldness in high places of the mountains. In the painting, the mountain peaks are high and steep but vigorous, and thousands of cliffs and ravines are covered with beautiful white snow, giving us a sense of elegance and refreshment in spite of coldness. The picture is lively with vigorous ink strokes and solid painting style. It is Zhang Chenglong’s magnum opus, painted in the 31st year the Wanli Reign of the Ming Dynasty (1603).

Zhang Chenglong, courtesy name Baiyun, was born in Daliang (today’s Kaifeng in Henan Province). The date of his birth or death is unknown. He lived in the late Ming dynasty (around the Wanli Reign). He was good at painting and had copied all of the famous paintings to form his own style. He was especially accomplished in landscape paintings with elegant skills. He also painted line drawings of people with high-standard skills. He was a quite famous painter in his time.
