Date:Tang Dynasty(618-906 CE)

Dimensions: Height: 20cm

Origin: Unearthed from Xiangyin County

This is a funerary object. As a vivid and delicate figure, it tells us much about embroidery and clothing as well as feminine temperament during the Tang Dynasty and is a rare piece of art in ancient China.

From her clothes, hairstyle and countenance, we can tell that she is a pretty maid. With her head tilted slightly upwards, she respectfully focuses her mind and smiles.

In ancient times, buns were sign of social status and changed as people grew older. This figure wears a double bun with one bun for each side of her head which was signified that she was an unmarried girl. The hairstyle of the figure matches her countenance and her identity as a maid.

The figure is a typical representation of open style clothing in Tang Dynasty.

A multiple-pleated flowing skirt that dragged across the ground symbolized a charming female figure during the Tang Dynasty. The traditional Chinese shoes with a cloud-like head were the style at that time and naturally emphasized the female walking gait.
