Origin: Excavated from Jinpenling Sand Center, Changsha City, Hunan Province in 1984

The sarcophagus consists of a cover, a body and a base, all chiseled out of one piece of red sandstone. The cover and body are decorated with patterns of half relief on all sides. The parts beyond the relief, smooth and level, might have been chiseled and polished. The lid is covered with designs of floating clouds and two cranes spreading their wings, implying that the soul will be ushered to Heaven. The body, in the shape of a trapezium, is carved on four sides with designs of the four gods guarding the coffin chamber, namely the Green dragon, Scarlet Bird, White Tiger and Black Tortoise. The base is decorated with designs of supine and overlapping lotus blossoms, and lozenge patterns. Its excellence is shown in its clear-cut contour and vivid designs.
