Duan stone is from Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, and it's been a famous material to make ever since the Tang Dynasty(618-907). Many people including scholars and collectors pursued it, especially the inkstone which was used by famous people. This one was collected by a collector. The inkstones made by Duan stone have different shapes and sizes with different forms appearing in different dynasties. This inkstone from the Qing Dynasty is oblong, with an oblong pool，uneven margin and back.

There are two Characters “Hanbi” on the upper part of the ink stone and a signature inscription “Yichounian Dongzhoujushi,1865”. Yichounian is the year 1865, Dongzhoujushi is He Shaoji’s assumed name. He came from Daozhou, and obtained the rank of Presented Scholar in Emperor Daoguang’s reign and became Director of Studies in Sichuan. He was a great calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty(1616-1911).
