Mirror has a long history in China. It was called jian or zhaozi in ancient times. Bronze mirrors in ancient times were mainly used for people to see themselves during makeup and to exorcise demons.

In the Western Han Dynasty, people started using bronze mirrors as the token of love between men and women, to express the connotative meaning of “heart to heart as reflected”. When they sent bronze mirrors to each other during their lifetime, it means “follow around day and night”; when bronze mirrors were buried in tombs, it means “loyalty till death”.
