Altogether 101 painted wooden standing figurines were excavated from Han tomb 1 at Mawangdui, with more of less identical size, expression, attire and hair style. Each of these figurines was made of one entire piece of wood. First, the outline of the human shape and attire was carved out. Then white chalk was applied as the base color, and the eyebrows were painted with black ink and the lips with vermilion color. Finally, red and black colors were used to paint out the designs of the attire.
