This curtain was used to send birthday congratulations. 100 Chinese characters Shou (longevity) were embroidered on a piece of red satin in Pinjin embroidery and surrounded by designs of many celestial beings offering birthday congratulations. Most of the characters were in seal script together with drawings. Some tortoises, antiques, bats, bamboo leaves, Ruyi-sceptres, and other auspicious designs were cleverly hidden in these characters. Five characters “Guang Dong Caiyuan embroidery” were embroidered on the lower left corner, so we know it was made by the Caiyuan Embroidery Dealer in Guangdong. With exquisite workmanship, full composition, and beautiful colors, this curtain is a masterpiece of Guangdong Embroidery.
